Back To School

Now that many are gearing up to go back to school, let's learn more about our computers and - most important - HOW TO LEARN about our computers and the software we use most often.

Not just a play on words, today's title not only suggests to us that we might want to go "back to school" to learn more about the machine we use everyday,

{as if many of us actually took a class on how to use the beast before we sat down at the keyboard}

BUT actually the title is a clue that much information can be had from school web pages (elementary through university)

Google Search on "how computer works"

( If you want to follow along at home and you are using Mozilla Firefox, then Right Mouse click on the colored words above and select "Open Link in New Tab" )

The quick Google search above had this page on it " How Computers Work: The CPU and Memory"

Looking at a page like this might be helpful to you, but also might be over your head as we don't know what educational level this was written for. Let's look carefully at the URL (Universal Resource Locator) or web address.

We see the first part - www.cs.uri.edu and know that this is an educational institution.

In the address bar of your browser - if you back space to leave just www.cs.uri.edu, you get this:

It is probably safe to say that this website is from people who know a thing or 2 about computers.

Looking carefully on the URL of the How Computers Work page we can see that this is only one page of many.
If we change the number in the "Reading04.htm" part of the address, we'll see many more pages on the subject of how computers work.
