"Compact Day" Meeting

The Society of Mayflower Descendants, Santa Barbara Colony, met on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at the Glen Annie Golf \par Club in Goleta with Governor Dolores Barton officiating. Governor Barton called the meeting to order at 11:40 A.M.. Governor Barton welcomed all present, and thanked James Blauer, State Education/Scholarship Chair and Dotty Wilson from the Orange County Colony for attending and bringing the large display of Mayflower sale items. Beverly Nickerson, Governor of the San Diego Colony, and her family were greeted. New members June De Voto, Lorraine Kocen, Yvonne Knerr, and Herbert Robinson were introduced and welcomed by the group. Thirty-nine persons were in attendance of whom 20 were Colony members, and 19 were guests.

The Flag Salute was led by Gary Smith.

In the absense of Chaplain Ruth Jackson, Governor Barton gave the invocation.

Secretary Judy Cardinal read the minutes of the April 22, 2006 meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Noel Van Slyke read the Treasurer's Report. The report was filed for audit.

There were no other reports from Officers.

Governor Barton conducted a memorial service for three recently deceased Colony members. The members were Helen Shook, John Dory, and Richard O,Shaughnessy. \par \par James Blauer read the Mayflower Compact.

Committee reports: Membership Chair Marnie Davies reported on publicity notices of meetings in local newspapers, and the placement of Mayflower brochures in local libraries.

Librarian: Governor Barton thanked Warren Warner for representing our Colony at the September 16, 2006 Board of Assistants Meeting in Irvine.

r Gary Smith reported on the Colony's new Web site, and distributed sample pages of the site to the group. He was thanked for his efforts along with his committee members, Tami Wilkening, Ruth Jackson, and Noel Van Slyke.

A Year to Date Membership Report was also distributed to the group by Deputy Governor Wilkening.

A report from the Executive Board on the establishment of a Colony Educational Fund and the rules for this Fund was distributed to all members.

Members then received copies of the motions passed by the Executive Board at tkeir August 26, 2006 meeting. These motions read as follows: (1) to establish an education fund. this fund to be funded by the State Allocation each year and the fund to be used for (a) donation to the State Scholarship Fund, (b) payment of additional Silver Books for the 3 original libraries i.e. Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society Library, Ventura County Public Library, Main Library, and Santa Maria Public Library, Main Library, (c) fund Silver Books at additional libraries, and (d) provide educational expenses incurred by the Educational Chair, and (2) (a) the Santa Barbara Colony wili support libraries only in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo Counties, and (b) libraries that will be supported (aside from the 3 current libraries, Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society Library, Ventura ~ounty Public Library, Main Library, and Santa Maria Public Library, Main Library) will be nominated by a Colony member. If more than one library is nominated the Board will establish the priority.

M/S/P (Gary Smith/Margaret Swanson) to defer consideration of the above distributed motions previously passed by the Executive Board on August 26, 2006 to the October 2007 meeting. Governor Barton urged the membership to read the motions and the report of the Educational Fund carefully prior to voting.

Parlimentarian Margaret Swanson reported on her recent trip to Plymouth. In her role of Mary Brewster, she explained the elements of her Pilgrim dress.

A nominating committee was formed. Margaret Swanson, Anne Burggraf, and Noel Van Slyke comprise the committee. The committee will present a slate of officers at the next meeting.

Governor Barton recommended that the By-Laws Committee research the issue of election date for the Colony. To conform to State Society election dates, our elections should take place in October rather than April.

M/S/P (Margaret Swanson/Gary Smith) that the By-Laws Committee research the change of date for Colony officer election, and present their recommendation at the next meeting.

Gowernor Barton urged the group to (1) consider Junior Membership for relatives as the price is going up, (2) consider donating at least one copy of the "Coming to America" Mayflower educational material to a local school, and (3) consider utilizing the State Society's Web site.

The meeting was recessed at 12:28 P.M. for lunch.

The meeting was called back to order at 1:03 P.M..

Program Committee Chair Anne Burggraf introduced guest speakers \Cederlof and Cheryl Vampola who spoke on the history of the Stow House and the Stow family. The role of the Goleta Valley Historical Society in the preservation of the Stow House was also discussed. Free passes to visit the Stow House were distributed to the group.

Governor Barton made the following announcements (1) The History Channel ~s having a presentation entitled "Desperate Crossing: \par The Untold Story of the Mayflower" on Sunday, November 19, 2006 at 8 P.M. EST, (2) 2007 marks the 400th Anniversary of the Founding of Jamestown, and (3) the Battle of Yorktown celebrates its 225th anniversary this year. \par \par ~overnor Barton also noted the following State Society information: (1) November 11, 2006 Board of Assistants Meeting in Oakland, (2) State Membership Meeting on June 16, 2007 in San Francisco celebrates the Society's 100th anniversary, and (3) members should keep posted by using the Society's Web site.

Secretary Judy Cardinal conducted the Roll Call of Ancestors. Edward Fuller had 11 descendants with William Brewster and Stephen Hopkins each having 9 decendants present. \par \par Governor Barton conducted the drawing for door prizes.

Governor Barton distributed the book "Pilgrims at Prayer" to all 5 officers. These books are considered Colony property, and must be turned over to the office successor.

Governor Barton reminded the group of the links of communication in our Society ranging from our local newsletter to our California Mayflower Quarterly Newsletter and the Mayflower Quarterly. Donations were encouraged to Plymouth sites such as the Plimoth Plantation. Members were also encouraged to share their Pilgrim heritage at a local school.

The next meeting will be on Saturday, April 28, 2007 at Glen Annie at 11 A.M. prompt. The Colony will have a 40th Birthday Party, and new officers will be installed.

Governor Barton gave the benediction.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:55 P.M..
