Education

The mission of the Education Committee is to promote awareness of the Pilgrims through lectures and literature. We particularly want to reach out to young children to tell them the Pklgrim story.

Secretary Ruth Jackson (in costume) and her daughter, Jody Balian have regularly met with pre-school and school-aged children around Thanksgiving time to tell them the story of the Pilgrims and the Indians who helped them to survive. The pictures below wetre from a pre-school program in Arroyo Grande. Ruth and Jody have also spoken to an "English as a second language" class. That class consisted of children who were new to the United States. Some were from China; Viet Nam; Mexico and other countries. The teacher helped to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal and for most of the students it was the first Thanksgiving meal they had ever enjoyed. The content of the visits is adjusted to the level of the children. It is a very rewarding experience and anyone desiring assistance in performing similar activities may contact Secretary Ruth Jackson (Click on the "Ofrficers" button on the main page).

The left, middle and right photos below are of the "store" of items available at Colony meetings. Second from the left is Secretary Ruth Jackson with the Mayflower Silver Edition Volumes donated recently to the Santa Maria Library. Second from the rigfht is the new Santa Maria Library.
