HISTORY OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE SANTA BARBARA COLONY

OF THE MAYFLOWER SOCIETY IN CALIFORNIA

The Santa Barbara Colony was formed May 19, 1967, through the efforts of Mrs. Lloyd F. Wheeler of Santa Barbara, along with several other interested parties. The names of the other early founders have not been ascertained, except that it is known that they continued to be involved with Mrs. Wheeler during the formative years and were a strong force in the Community.

The documentation regarding the early years appears to have been misplaced at sometime and has not resurfaced to date. We do know that the past Governors were as follows:

Mrs. Lloyd Wheeler. 1967 - 1969

Mrs. Sylvia L. Decker 1969 - 1971 (deceased.)

Mrs. Bruce Landis 1971 - 1973

Currently, the Colony meets twice a year. Our Annual meeting is held in April of each year. Our Mayflower Compact meeting is held in October of each year. Our membership consists of approximately One Hundred Twenty-eight members. Our Colony area is from Paso Robles to the North and Malibu, Chatsworth and Simi Valley to the South. This covers most of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Please see the State web site for membership information and requirements. You do not have to be a member of our Colony to attend our membership meetings and we do encourage you to attend. We look forward to having you as a member of our Colony in the near future.
