The President's Message

March 2008

Special Interest Groups (SIGS) status report: For the benefit of new club members and visitors, SIGs are classes for members interested in a specific subject related to computer use. Classes sponsored by CIPCUG are free to club members.

Thanks to the generosity of Ventura County Computers, most SIGs are held in their offices. The dates, times and locations are listed on page 3 of The Outer Edge, the monthly newsletter. Those wishing to attend can also check the club Web site at Suggestions for new SIGs, or a repeat of a previous one, are always welcome.

At 8:45 a.m. on the monthly meeting date, there is a SIG for members switching to Windows XP from Windows 98 or other systems no longer supported by Microsoft. It is held in the room next to the general meeting room. The Internet and e-mail SIG is in the meeting room.

Unfortunately, due to the closing of Comp USA, we have had to look for a location for Michael Shalkey's post - monthly meeting SIG. We had hoped to use a facility in the new Camarillo Library. We obtained a copy of the requirements for the use of the facility. These were reviewed with a library representative. The results were discussed by the Board of Directors. Due to the restrictions on usage and the costs involved, the board voted not to proceed further at the present time.

Thanks to John Weigle, the club may be able to use a room in the new Ventura County Star offices just off the 101 freeway in Camarillo. The room does not have computers on which members can follow Michael's instructions. If you know of any facility nearby which we may use and which is not too distant from our meeting place, please contact Michael Shalkey ( or any of the board members.

On Feb. 26, I attended a meeting with representatives of the Ventura County Star to learn about changes being made in its online format. The Web section named YourHub has been canceled. It has been replaced by a new feature named YourNews. To find out how to post stories, see Subject to space availability, computer club news will be printed on Tuesday if received by 6 p.m. on the previous Thursday and/or in the Fast Forward section of the Monday edition. Under club bylaws an election of Board of Directors members will be held at the annual meeting in May. Further information will be discussed at the March and April meetings.
