West Coast Swing

From all over the US they came.. By train, by bus, by car, by plane - from Fullerton, a few of us could have come by covered wagon. All coming to San Diego. Why San Diego? To take a bus to Ensenada - How would you get to Canada if you didn't go to Mexico first? The first leg of the trip was a cruise aboard the luxurious Norwegian Sky. The first port of call gave us a full day in San Fancisco. Many and varied were the activities there. We had breakfast with a couple who livved nearby in San Ramon. They had been on the ship for 18 days, with their three teen-age children, before our group joined the cruise. When they got off, they rented a car, drove home, did some laundry, drove back and reboarded the ship for points North. After a few more cays of cruising, we left the ship in Victoria.

Two days in Victoria and two nights at the Empress Hotel. Much to see and do there. Many of us went to the butterfly garden, the museum and Buchart Gardens, which was in glorious bloom. Some of us visited the four new brew-pubs there, sampling more than twently different brews. Our last boat ride (on the ferry to the mainland) led us to the city of Vancouver, with it's interesting architecture. One afternoon and morning weren't quite enough time there.

Passing Shannon Falls, we arrived in the ski village of Whistler. After the Vancouver Westin it was hard to get used to accommodations with only one TV set. We all managed to overcome our disappointment and enjoy the snow and scenery. After a bus and train ride we found ourselves in the emerald city of Seattle. The Pike Place Market, the museums, the underground, the monorail to the space needle, the aquarium and other attractions more than filled the brief day. The trip ended there with many of us heading toward California on the Coast Starlight. .
